WISHES (oneshot sequel of 'Oh Brother') [GL]

“Hey hey, Emi. I found an interesting stuff.” The taller college student in a long shirt and mini shorts gets up from the bed as she announces the news to her roommate. The said roommate is at her desk; currently busy writing a paper due two weeks from now.
“Oh? What is it about?” The girl in pajamas takes off her computer glasses, quick to sense her roommate’s excitement.

“Did you know that tomorrow’s event can grant wishes? Look!” Rianne shows her phone to Emi.

“What?” Emi quickly reads the article her roommate found online. “Hm... it just says that the Super Blue Blood Moon is a good time to meditate. And if you focus enough, you can use its energy to boost the materialization of your wishes. Not grant them, by definition.” Emi puts the phone down and hesitates whether to point out her roommate’s faulty reading comprehension.

“It doesn’t really matter, you know!” Rianne laughs. “It’s just once in a blue moon so let’s make the most out of it!” The cheerful roommate then hums while getting stuff from her drawer. “Here. The article says it’s better to write the wishes on colorful paper and put it somewhere we can always see.”

Emi carefully takes the Post-it notes from Rianne, as if taking time to catch up to her enthusiasm. It’s usually her roommate’s infectious energy that makes her succumb to her quirks without much of a resistance. And it doesn’t bother her at all now.

The next day, the two girls have their Wish Lists ready to be posted on the wall next to their bed (yes, they share the same bed and it’s a long story why). Emi, it turns out, doesn’t need much space with her green Post-it note sitting alone in the middle of her white share of concrete. Rianne, upon noticing her roommate is already done, pauses for a while to read Emi’s list with anticipation.

“Hm, let’s see... Uh... Please give us a boost in life. More patience and dedication to finish our goals. Find peace, equality, and prosperity. Have extra strength and courage to get us through uncertainties...?”

Rianne stares blankly at her roommate’s short list. She looks at the girl, clueless of her reaction, and thinks whether what she just read were world prayers instead of personal wishes. But knowing her roommate, it makes her think it’s just so like Emi. And Rianne is certain her roommate has put a lot of thought in it. “Those are indeed... um, good-natured,” she just manages to say. “But hey, what about us? Don’t you have a wish for us?” The now recovering Rianne pouts at the other girl.

“There is. It falls under that one.” Emi points her finger on the last phrase to emphasize it.

Even that one looks uncertain, Rianne silently comments and comes to a conclusion that her roommate does need some boost. Pumped up, she hurriedly finishes posting her list so she can show her roommate what true wishes are. “Here, take a look and be inspired,” Rianne beams widely while presenting her self-proclaimed achievement.

Emi skims the contents of her roommate’s colorful Post-its and most of them give her an impression like something pulled out from a bucket list rather than something made for a wish list. The change of tone at the last portion catches Emi’s attention, though.

-I wish Emi will become a great teacher like what she wants to be. (I don’t have doubts with her abilities but her personality might be a challenging factor that’s why I’m making this wish as a warranty. LOL. Oh my she’s gonna read this. LOLOLOL)
-I wish to become a successful psychologist. (Or anything that makes me a useful citizen. LOL)
-But of course before that, I wish to graduate on time with Emi.
-Speaking of Emi, I wish she’ll learn to speak her mind more.
-I wish she’ll always share her troubles with me, and not make me worry.
-I wish she’ll rely on me more.
-I wish for us to be closer. πŸ’Ÿ
-I wish we’ll stay together for a long time. πŸ’Ÿ

Emi finishes reading and looks up to find Rianne blushing. “S-so, how are they? The last ones in particular...” Emi feels like blushing too upon her roommate’s question.

“Well, what can I say... but, those aren’t supposed to be wishes. Those are things we have to work on, right?” Emi looks at the last part of Rianne’s list again, having a feeling what she said wasn’t enough. She wants to talk more but she can’t think of what to say.

“Well, you’re right,” Rianne replies and lets out an awkward laugh.

Emi looks at her roommate and fumbles for what to do. She somehow manages to reach for her hand. “Um, let’s go now? It’s almost time.” And the two silently walk as they head outside to their apartment’s balcony.

That last one isn’t bad. Not bad at all, Emi muses while staring at the girl sitting beside her and happily gazing at the moon. But, let’s make it for the longest time we can, she finishes the thought with a blush.

Rianne closes her eyes and mutters, “May our wishes be granted.”

Emi feels a squeeze on her hand and so she does the same. Not long after, she feels Rianne’s weight shift on her side, her roommate’s head finding a comfortable spot on her shoulder.

Their hands still intertwined, the shorter girl adjusts to be at ease with their position. The moonlight is brighter than usual, and the soft glow beside her makes Emi feel like she’s entering a dreamy state. She turns to hug Rianne with her free hand and gently places a kiss on her roommate’s head. She then rests her cheek on the other girl’s silky tresses and whispers something while looking at the moon.

Rianne lifts her head to free her ear. “Hm? Sorry I didn’t hear what you said.”

“It’s nothing,” Emi replies with a smile.

“Eh? No, say it again! You’re smiling and I have a feeling it’s something important!”

Emi looks at her softly. “I said...”

The moon is smiling at us, don’t you think?
